Background: Despite current scientific evidence indicating that autotransplanted teeth show favourable results, autotransplantation is still not regarded as a mainstream treatment option in the Netherlands. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the prognosis of autotransplanted teeth. Furthermore, it was analysed in how many cases additional treatment was necessary. In this way, it is possible to give the patient a clearer understanding of what can be expected after an autotransplantation. To the best of our knowledge, this has not yet been described in current literature. Materials and methods: The medical files and radiographs of patients who had received a tooth autotransplantation in the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands were analysed. Survival and success were determined for the autotransplanted teeth. Success was defined as a postoperative situation in which a autotransplanted tooth was functional, without indication of clinical and radiographic pathology. Distinction was made between a direct success and an indirect success, in which additional treatment was necessary. The influence of the possible predictor variables sex, age, donor tooth type, recipient tooth site, reason for autotransplantation, stage of root development, and surgeon on survival and success were analysed. Results: A total of 61 autotransplantations were included (47 patients, with a mean age of 12,8 years, s.d.1,7, range 9,5-20,2 years). The median follow-up was 2,3 years (range 13 days - 5,6 years). The total survival and success rates were 95,1% and 89,7%, respectively. 82,1% was a direct success. In 8,6% success was achieved after additional treatment. The total survival and success rates after 1 year were 97,4% and 94,9%, respectively. In 82,1% a direct success was achieved. No possible predictor variables for survival and success could be identified. Conclusion: Based on the favourable results, it was concluded that autotransplantation of teeth is an interesting treatment option. In only a few cases additional treatment is necessary.
