Abstract

Problem and objective In the Netherlands, every year an estimated 119.000 children between the age of 0-17 are victims of child abuse and neglect. Recognizing and reporting these children is very important, however dentists are having difficulties to act properly in these situations. This study aims to give an insight in the experience of dentists and dental students with child neglect and the need of support with recognizing and reporting child neglect. The influence of several variables like training, Individuele Profilering Kindertandheelkunde (IP-Kthk), and being employed in a dental clinic on the need of support will be investigated. Research material This research is organized within the dental research network “Tandheelkundig Onderzoek en Praktijk Noord Nederland” (TOP-NN project) and last year Dentistry students at the University of Groningen. A total of 14 dentists and 27 students participated in this study. They were asked to fill out a questionnaire, which contained questions concerning the background of the participant, some hypothetical questions about the experience with suspicions of child neglect and questions about the need of support of the participant (in the form of a contact or the NOCTP). The need of support within the dentists and students is analyzed with descriptive statistics. To analyze the influence of some variables (extra training, IP-Kthk and being employed in a dental practice) on the need for support, the Chi-squared test is used and where necessary the Fisher exact value. Results Every dentist participating in this study ever had a suspicion of child neglect, against 42% of the dental students. Only 29% of the dentists and 37% of the students are known with the content of the child check (in Dutch: de kindcheck), which is described in de reporting code. Based on our results, 93% of the dentists and 85% of the students participating in this study are in need of support to recognize and report child neglect. The majority of dentists (71%) and the majority of students (67%) prefer support in the form of a contact above support in the form of the NOCTP. Dentists would like to have a contact, being either someone from ‘Veilig Thuis’ (21%), a general practitioner (21%) or a dental colleague(21%). The majority of the students (56%) would like to see ‘Veilig Thuis’ as a contact, followed by a dental colleague (26%). The Chi-square test does not show a significant degree of correlation between the need for support and the different variables. According to this research, the variables do not influence the need for support in recognizing and reporting child neglect. Conclusion Dentists and students do have experience with suspicions of child neglect. They are not well informed about the content of the meldcode. 5 Dentists and students are in need of support with recognizing and reporting child neglect. They would use both types of support, a contact of NOCTP, in their dental practice. There is however an obvious preference for a contact person.
