Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to provide insight in the opinions and beliefs of general practitioners on oncologic follow-up and the possible role of general practitioners in future oncologic follow-up. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted, consisting of semi-structured interviews. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed based on the method of thematic analysis. At least two researchers coded the data. Discrepancies were discussed until consensus was reached. The saving, coding and categorizing of data was done using ATLAS.ti software. Findings: The opinions of the 20 participating general practitioners on a possible substitution were ambiguous. Data analysis resulted in four major themes: barriers, conditions, drawbacks and patient characteristics. General practitioners doubted there was sufficient evidence to support follow-up in its current form. General practitioners noted they might partially substitute oncologic follow-up to primary care in the future, given multiple conditions were fulfilled. General practitioners were unsure of their ability to give follow-up care. General practitioners considered older patients with comorbidities to be the most suitable group for substitution. Conclusions: General practitioners have differing opinions on substitution and require adequate resources to successfully implement a future substitution. Our analysis implies that a partial substitution of oncologic follow-up would be feasible provided that resources, guidance, collaboration and quality/safety control are ample.
