Abstract

Background: The global incidence of chronic diseases is rising. It is the leading cause of deaths worldwide. An unhealthy lifestyle is often the cause of chronic diseases. Prevention and lifestyle support in general practice could play a major role in promoting a healthy lifestyle. Despite that, it is a controversial topic. The Dutch government, on the other hand, is focusing more on prevention. For example, by making a budget available to implement the combined lifestyle intervention in 2019 as insured basic health care. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the view of GPs on their role in prevention and lifestyle support for their patients and to know more about the current status of the implementation of the combined lifestyle intervention. Methods: A study design with two phases was performed. The first phase consisted of qualitative semi-structured interview among 15 GPs. During the second phase, this data was triangulated into an online quantitative survey that was filled in by 94 GPs. Results: The GPs’ opinions were divided on whether prevention and lifestyle support is an important task of the GP. GPs agreed that secondary prevention is their task, but have different opinions on whether primary prevention is their task too. Only few GPs referred their patients to the combined lifestyle intervention. Reason for this was that the combined lifestyle intervention was available in a limited amount of regions. GPs were sceptical with regard to the feasibility of the combined lifestyle intervention. Conclusion: GPs’ opinions were divided on whether primary prevention is the GPs’ task. There are currently few regions that offer the combined lifestyle intervention. Further research is necessary to investigate the implementation, feasibility and effects of the combined lifestyle intervention.
