Abstract

Objective. To compare the relationship between the original Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ) and the CHAQ38 with the Childhood Myositis Assessment Scale (CMAS) in a population of children with Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM), throughout their disease course. Methods. In this retrospective study, original CHAQ and CHAQ38 scores from 50 patients with JDM (20 c3'; 30 Sj?) were matched with CMAS scores at 4 time periods of the disease. The mean age of the patients at diagnosis date was 7.6 ± 3.5 (range 3.0 - 15.4 years). Bivariate and partial (controlled for age) correlations were calculated at the 4 periods. Results. At time of diagnosis (± 1 month), both the original CHAQ and the CHAQ38 showed a high correlation with the CMAS, with the CHAQ38-CMAS correlation (r = -.960, p < .005) being higher than the original CHAQ-CMAS correlation ( -.805, p < .05). When controlled for age, the original CHAQ-CMAS correlation was not significant, however, the CHAQ38- CMAS correlation remained significant (r = -.966, p < .005). At period 2, 3 and 4 (6 - 27 months after diagnosis), the correlations between both versions of the CHAQ and the CMAS decreased, with bivariate correlations ranging from .032 to -.652 and partial correlations ranging from -.418 to -.631, with higher original CHAQ-CMAS correlations. Conclusion. During active disease, the CHAQ38 seems to be a better instrument to use in clinical practice for patients with JDM.
