Abstract

Aim: The DCDDaily is an instrument constructed to optimally asses criterion B of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV (DSM-IV) in children with possible Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Measuring activity of daily living (ADL) in children with DCD could improve the diagnostic process. In the current study, the reliability of the total test (21 items) as well as the individual items was analyzed in 5-8 year old children. Methods: 77 Children (mean age= 6y 4 mo, SD = 11mo) were assessed with the DCDDaily, of which 62 were also assessed with the Movement Assessment Battery for Children 2 (MABC2), the MABC2 Checklist and the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ). These 62 children were divided in a typically developing (TD) group (N=49, mean age= 6y 4mo, SD=1yo) and a DCDgroup (N=13, mean age= 6y 8mo, SD = 9mo). Results: The DCD group performed worse than the TD group on the DCDDaily (p=0.001). Intra Class Correlation performed on the total sample as well as the age groups of 5,6,7 and 8 year old children showed to be high (r ~ 0.8), as was the test-retest reliability of 9 TD children (r = 0.914). Six components were found using Exploratory Factor Analysis. Conclusions: This study proved the DCDDaily to be a reliable instrument to measure ADL in 5-8 year old children.
