Abstract

Summary: For the prevention and treatment of children with overweight is the recognizing of the parents very important. Parents recognize the build of their children not enough. The parents perception of the build of their children is being influenced by their psychosocial lifestyle factors like ethnicity and diet history. The parents perception of the build of children (n=2203) is received with a questionnaire and were asked to score on a 5 point scale their perception of their child’s weight, ranging from ‘too light’ to ‘too heavy’. Youth health assistants measured children’s height and weight. The data was evaluated using the Fisher’s exact test. The perceptions of the mother and the fathers are combined seen there was no difference between them. The results shows that parents with overweight have more often children with overweight[p<0.01]. Only 28,2% of the children with overweight are correct estimated by their parents[p<0.01]. Ethnicity and diet history of the parents affects their perception. Parents with a not Dutch origin estimate more often their children’s weight incorrect[p=0.004]. Overweight at childhood age and adult age of the parents makes that they estimate more incorrect [p=0.035]. Parents who are bullied at childhood age have more chance to develop an incorrect perception of their children’s weight[p<0.01]. Parents with another origin and an overweight diet history have a more disturbed perception about their children’s weight. In general all parents doesn’t estimate correctly enough. We should give information about a healthy lifestyle for parents and their children, nationwide in prevention programs. With a focus on the parents who is dealing with these psychosocial lifestyle factors.
