Background. The recently introduced Nexfin device permits continuous non-invasive measurement of various haemodynamic variables in a beat-to-beat fashion by means of a cuff-manometer and a light sensor. The present study evaluated the accuracy of Nexfin’s non-invasive arterial pressure compared with the current clinical standard: arterial blood pressure measured with an invasive arterial catheter (IABP) and with the non-invasive automated blood pressure cuff device (NIBP). Methods: 110 patients with a clinical indication for IABP were included after permission of the METC en after informed consent was obtained. The Nexfin sensor was placed at the intermediate phalanx. De IABP was already measured in these patients and the NIBP was measured every X minutes. Results: The mean bias and precision between de Nexfin MAP and the IABP MAP (about 2 mm Hg, 9 mm Hg) en between the NIBP MAP and the IABP MAP (about -3 mm Hg, 13 mm Hg) remained relatively stable. However, the precision between the IABP MAP and the NIBP MAP was greater. Conclusion: The Nexfin monitor could replace the NIBP, but it is not validated if the Nexfin device is of greater value than the IABP.
