Abstract

Aim: To examine the possible relationship between vitamin D levels and depression in a population derived from the outpatient department Mood Disorders at the University Center for Psychiatry (UCP) Groningen. Patients and Methods: Levels of serum vitamin D were measured and analysed in patients with depressive symptoms at intake. The severity of depression was two times measured using the Inventory Depressive Symptomatology (IDS-sr). The first IDS-sr was assessed at intake and the second at evaluation. At evaluation an additional questionnaire was assessed: the vitamin D risk factor questionnaire. Results: Patients with a lower vitamin D had higher IDS-sr scores at intake, evaluation and intake and evaluation combined, compared to subjects with higher vitamin D levels. This association was not significant at intake, however there was a significant association at evaluation and also in the combined value of intake and evaluation. Conclusion: Low levels of vitamin D are associated with more depressive symptoms. Although there is no conclusive evidence if a low vitamin D level is a risk factor for depression or is a consequence of depressive lifestyle.
