Abstract
The competition structure in field hockey and the adapted club selection for players in the age of 10-12 suggest a possible early specialization. In the first part of this study the moment of specialization in field hockey was measured using a direct approach. The sporting activities of club selection team players (n=26) and regular team players (n=27), aged 10-12, were compared. The results sh~wed that club selection team players spent twice as much time on deliberate practice in field hockey and less time on deliberate practice in other sports than regular team players. In addition, more than half (54%) of the club selection team players were also involved in a regional selection program. We concluded that club selection team players specialized in field hockey. In the second part of this study a group of current club selection team players (n=55), aged 10-14, were split up into two groups, separating early specializers (specialized at an age <12) from regular specializers (specialized at an age 2:12) by investigating their developmental pathways and looking at their field hockey history. In the third part of this study we compared motivation, goal orientation, and self-regulation between the group of early- (n=38) and regular specializers (n=17). No significant differences were found between both groups (p>0.05) but a trend was found towards a higher score on extrinsic motivation (d=0.41), selfmonitoring (d=0.44), and self-efficacy (d=0.51) in early specializers. In this exploratory study the authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of an early specialization in sport.
