Abstract
Non-parasitic liver cysts are a common phenomenon in the population, which are incidentally detected during the increasing use of radiographic studies such as Ultrasound, CT and MRI. Most of the patients with non-parasitic liver cysts are asymptomatic and treated conservatively by observation and follow-up. Only a minority of the patients develops symptoms. The correlation between radiological detected liver cysts and symptoms can be quite complex. This explains why the treatment indications are still poorly defined. Our study attempted to change this. Because the surgical treatment of non-parasitic liver cysts focuses on symptom relief, we performed a Health Related Quality of Life study. This quality of life assessment illustrated that the quality of life of patients with non-parasitic liver cysts improved significantly after surgery. We also found that asymptomatic patients and patients older than 70 years, had less improvement in quality of life after surgery and should therefore preferably not be operated. Patients with PCLD were hospitalized longer with more complications. Looking in hindsight, our data of the last decades illustrated that the development of laparoscopic liver cyst surgery has contributed to an improvement in care, with shorter hospital stay, - follow-up and lower recurrence rates. Laparoscopic fenestration seems the treatment of choice and an omental transposition might be omitted. This study has optimized and refined the surgical treatment indications for patients with non-parasitic liver cysts, as there is a great need for adequate treatment indications for patients with non-parasitic liver cysts.
