Abstract

Background: The aim of this study is determining correlation of judgment of esthetic outcome of solitary implant-crown in the upper jaw, between a professional from the Netherlands and a professional from the Unites States of America, between patients and a Dutch professional and an American professional, and between the ICA Index by Meijer et al. 2005 and Belser et al. 2009. Methods: Sixty patients (33 female and 27 male; age 18 to 72 years) previously treated with dental implants in the esthetic zone of the upper jaw were judged on esthetic outcome using frontal photographs of the dentition, by a Dutch professional and an American professional, using the ICA Index and WES. The patientgroup judged esthetic outcome using a questionnaire based on the ICA Index and WES. Kendall's tau is used to determine the correlation. Results: The analysis showed a 6o/o agreement between the Dutch professional and the American professional using ICA Index and a 4% agreement using WES. Analysis of patients and professionals showed no significant agreement using both ICA Index and WES. There is a 12 % agreement between ICA Index and WES by the Dutch professional and a 44% agreement by the American professional. Without distinction of nationality the analysis showed an agreement of34% between ICA Index and WES. Conclusions: This study showed a low degree of agreement of judging esthetic outcome of solitary implant-crowns in the upper jaw, between a Dutch and an American professional, no agreement between patient and professional and a moderate agreement between ICA Index and WES. Judging esthetics using indices is a new method and therefore more prospective clinical trials are needed to further develop these esthetic indices.
