Abstract

Introduction: In this study, the effect of a three-headed (TH) toothbrush was compared with a conventional manual toothbrush in patients who depent on their caregiver for their oral hygiene. Methods: This was an experimental, randomized study, combined with a short questionnaire. Two toothbrushes were compared: in the experimental group a TH-toothbrush was used, and in the control group a conventional manual toothbrush was used. The amount of plaque was scored with the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) and gingival bleeding with the Gingival Bleeding Index. 18 Patients and their caregivers participated in this study. Results: The multivariate test revealed no significant main effect in plaque and bleeding of Group (F (2,15) = l.20),p =. 33. There was a significant main effect of Time (F (2,15) = 4.78,p =. 025. There was no significant interaction of Timex Group (F (2,15) = 0.72 ,p =.50); using the TH-toothbrush had no effect on plaque- and gingival scores. The Wilcoxon Signed rank test showed a significant difference in the degree of resistance between first and second measurement (p = 0.04) within the TH-toothbrush group. For the other variables (frequency of teeth brushing, experience with brushing and experience of handling the toothbrush), no significant differences were found within the experimental group as well as the control group. The Mann-Whitney U -test also showed no significant differences between the two groups for the aforementioned variables. Conclusion: The TH-toothbrush did not have an effect on the amount of plaque and gingival bleeding when caregivers brushed the patients' teeth .. However, the the resistance of the patients during toothbrushing was reduced in the TH-brush group, which could result in better oral health care on the long term. Het gebruik
