Abstract
Objectives: To investigate sleep quality and sleep movement behavior in Parkinson Disease (PD) patients and older adults and to explore relations between sleep quality and sleep movement behavior. Methods: Ten older adults and five PD patients were measured during three consecutive nights with the Dynaport Minimod system, a tri-axial accelerometer that measures sleep movements. Furthermore, sleep diaries and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to measure sleep quality. Results: With regard to sleep quality PD patients scored worse on the PSQI-subscore "sleep disturbances". With regard to sleep movement behavior PD patient showed trends towards a larger percentage of time lying supine, more transitions, a longer duration of transitions, more smaller transitions and more sitting transitions. All variables showed medium to large effect sizes. Bad sleepers (with or without PD) spent a larger percentage of time lying supine, showed more frequent sitting transitions and presented smaller transition sizes. Furthermore, there were indications for several relations between sleep movement behavior and sleep quality although they seem to vary between the measured groups. Conclusion: There are indications that sleep movement behavior can differentiate between older adults and PD patients and between good and bad sleepers. Furthermore, there are several indications for a relation between sleep movement behavior and sleep quality. The small sample sizes and the explorative nature preclude definite conclusions. Larger scale research is needed to confirm and elaborate the findings.
