Abstract

Background: Children and youth are increasingly dealing with overweight and obesity. The amount of physical activity a child gets is also given a role in this. Factors that cause physical activity, particularly in young children (age 4 to 6 years), aren’t still completely clear. The purpose of this study is to find out if certain parental characteristics affect the degree of physical activity of the child. Furthermore we studied the influence of childcare on the degree of physical activity of the child. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study within the GECKO Drenthe study. In total there were 816 children included, who have all worn a triaxial accelerometer. The parental characteristics concerned physical activity, age, BMI and number of working-hours. This data and the data on childcare are collected by means of questionnaires, which are completed by the parents. Correlations have been used to analyze the relation between the various parental characteristics and the physical activity levels of the child. Significant results were further analyzed using linear regression. These were corrected for gender and BMI of the child. The relationship between physical activity of the child and childcare was analyzed using ANOVA. Results: There is a significant positive relation between the physical activity levels of mother and the physical activity levels of the child. The physical activity level of father only had a positive effect on the son. The working-hours of the mother had a significant negative effect with the physical activity levels of the daughter. No relation was found between the physical activity level of the child and age, BMI and childcare. Conclusion: physical activity levels and working time of parents may have influence on the physical activity levels of their child. Age and BMI of parents and childcare have no influence. Further research for the influence of the number of working hours of parents is desired.
