Abstract

Introduction: Dizziness is in the top rank of common complaints seen by the general practitioner where organic as well as psychological factors play a determining role. Type-D personality is associated with several chronic disease in general. Therefore we are interested to see if it is associated with chronic dizziness as well, and to which extent it influences the experienced impediment of the disease. We also investigate whether chronic hyperventilation, anxiety and depression are associated with chronic dizziness and type D personality. Method: By the means of the Dizziness handicap inventory (DHI), Nijmeegse chronic hyperventilation index, Type-D personality (DS14) questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) we collected data from a tertiary referral centre for chronic dizziness. We looked at associations between type-D personality, anxiety, depression and chronic hyperventilation with chronic dizzy patients. Within the group of chronic dizzy patients, we investigated to which extend anxiety, depression and chronic hyperventilation are associated with type-D personality and its effect on the level of impediment of the dizziness. Results: Within the study sample of 71 chronic dizzy patients and 71 participants in the control group, positive associations could be seen between type-D personality and chronic hyperventilation with chronic dizziness compared to the control group. Within this group of chronic dizzy patients with a type-D personality we determined a significantly higher level of dizziness impediment. We also found strong correlations between anxiety, depression and hyperventilation with each other and with dizziness. Conclusion: This study shows that type-D personality can be associated with chronic dizziness, as well as anxiety, depression and hyperventilation. We can conclude that next to anxiety disorder, depression and chronic hyperventilation, also personality traits play an important role in chronic dizziness and the experienced impediment of the disease.
