Abstract
Objectives: 1. To investigate which factors are predictive for a successful pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) treatment in women aged ≥55 years with a symptomatic urogenital prolapse; 2. To investigate the course of the degree of urogenital prolapse among women who underwent a PFMT treatment for this disease. Methods: An observational, prospective cohort study with a 12-month follow-up in 225 women aged ≥55 years who received PFMT treatment for urogenital prolapse (POP-Q stage 1-3). The primary outcome for the first research question was the patients’ experience of an improvement of symptoms, the secondary outcome was an improvement of ≥ 50% in symptoms measured with the PFDI-20 questionnaire. A logistic regression analysis was performed. For research question 2 the primary outcome was the difference in the degree of the prolapse in centimetres between baseline and follow-up (Wilcoxon signed rank test) Results: A higher educational degree, a complicated parturition, a better mental health and a lower POP-Q stage were predictive for the experience of an improvement of symptoms. A lower age and a better mental health were predictive an improvement of ≥50% of symptoms measured with the PFDI-20 questionnaire. 2. There was no significant difference in the degree of urogenital prolapse of the anterior wall (-0.04 cm; p=0,473), the posterior wall (0.16 cm; p=0,061) and the middle compartment (0.31 cm; p=0,093) between baseline and 12-month follow-up. Conclusion: 1. A better mental health was predictive for a successful PMFT treatment in both models. 2. There was no significant difference in the degree of urogenital prolapse between baseline and 12-month follow-up.
