This study investigates the possible relationship between central sleep apnoea (CSA) and glaucoma. One of the main causes of CSA is high altitude sickness, and Acetazolamide (ACZ) is a drug that has been used to alleviate this problem. ACZ has also been used as part of glaucoma treatment for many years. We therefore investigate whether glaucoma patients taking ACZ are less likely to have sleep apnoea (SA). We utilized two existent questionnaires that were designed to screen for risk of SA: the STOP-BANG and the Epworth sleepiness scale. We included patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (n=104) and controls (n=66) who were above 50 years old. The results showed no significant difference in the risk of SA between the glaucoma group and controls, nor between the ACZ and non-ACZ glaucoma subgroups. The results from both questionnaires showed that a high risk of SA was more pronounced in males compared to females.
