Abstract
Aim A comparison between Smartseal and gutta-percha on residual root canal filling material after root canal retreatment. Methodology Fifty extracted single-rooted human teeth were prepared up to an apical size of 40.06 at 1.0 mm from the apical foramen and randomly assigned to two groups of 25 teeth each. Group 1 was filled with a Smartseal Propoint and sealer. Group 2 was filled with gutta-percha and AH 26. The root canal fillings were removed with ProTaper retreatment files and ProTaper finishing files. After splitting the roots longitudinally digital photographs of the root canal walls were made 24 hours after root canal retreatment for both groups and after 7 day for group 1. The visual amount of residual obturation material on the root canal wall was scored and the percentage was calculated. The time for removing the root canal filling was also recorded. Differences between the groups were statistically analyzed with the paired and unpaired t-test at a significance level of 0.05. Results 24 hours after retreatment there was no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). There was a higher amount of residual root canal filling material after 7 days than after 1 day in the Smartseal group (P < 0.05). It takes longer to remove the Smartseal material in comparison with the removal of gutta-percha. Conclusion An equal amount of remaining root canal filling after root canal retreatment was seen between Smartseal and gutta-percha after 24 hours. To acquire the same result it takes longer to remove Smartseal. 7 days after root canal retreatment a higher amount of Smartseal material is seen than after 24 hours.
