Abstract
This study performs research on how innovation projects are organized within professional service firms (PSF). By combining the two research fields of theory development and academic problem solving, some valuable insights are delivered. PSFs are becoming increasingly important in today’s economy as well as the effective organization of innovation management. However, results show that it is difficult to compare PSFs due to the diverse characteristics between types of PSFs. Innovations within PSFs are generally initiated by employees. This study explains this by relating it to the fields of intrapreneurship, the lone inventor and strategic recognition. Few research focuses on the organization of innovations within PSFs, therefore this study researches innovation projects initiated by healthcare professionals within an academic medical center. Results showed that currently no formal organization of innovation projects within the hospital exists. Initiators encountered a number of difficulties of which the commercialization of projects and the filing for subsidies were the greatest. This study proposes an advice plan to improve this situation. A framework of a new central innovation hub was developed which facilitates better organization and support for innovation projects developed by the hospital’s employees. However, this plan is especially developed for the hospital. Due to its specificity and the difficulty of comparing different types of PSFs, a general description of the organization of innovation projects within PSFs proves to be too difficult to accomplish and turned out to be beyond the scope of this study.
