Abstract
Background: Treatment of Parkinsons disease is symptomatic and frequently with a treatment consisting of a large number of drugs for several times a day. A large number of drugs for several times a day are of a negative influence on therapy adherence, resulting in a suboptimal treatment and a lower quality of life. A medication review is a way to simplify complicated medication schedules possibly resulting in an improved quality of life. Objectives: To investigate whether a medication review executed by a community pharmacist influences quality of life in patients with Parkinsons disease. Secondary objectives: activities of daily life, presence of non-motor symptoms, disease perception and the quality of life of caregivers. Method: This randomised controlled study was conducted in two general hospitals, the Medisch Spectrum Twente and Ziekenhuis Groep Twente. Patients with an age ≥ 18 years, with ≥ 4 different drugs and ≥ 4 different intake moments a day and living (semi)-independent were included. The intervention consisted of a medication review performed by community pharmacists. The outcomes were the scores on the PDQ-36, the ALDS, the NMS-Quest, the EQ-5D, the VAS and the PDQ-carer 6 months after performing the medication review. Results: In total 95 patients were included with a mean age of 72.7 years, 5.2 intake moments and 8.1 drugs. After 6 months there was no significant difference in the scores of the PDQ-39 in patients with Parkinsons disease after performing a medication review (p=0.92), nor in the ALDS (p=0.14), the NMS-Quest (p=0.44), the EQ-5D (p=0.92), the VAS (p=0.90) and the PDQ-carer (p=0.16).
