Abstract

The orthopedic ward, amongst others, has need of an instrument that can measure patient acuity, in order to improve quality of healthcare, make planning of staff and hospital admission of patients more effective and facilitate a better healthcare financing model. The aim of this study is to develop a concept version of an instrument that is able to measure patient acuity, which can be used with patients who have had total hip replacement surgery. In doing so, we will get an impression of the practical usability of such an instrument. Furthermore we will try to get a first impression of patient acuity in the orthopedic ward and factors influencing patient acuity. The instrument consists of: - patient specific features, possibly influencing patient acuity - a form which can be used to measure time needed to deliver care to patients - a questionnaire that indicates perception of patient acuity by nurses.; The instrument was tested at the orthopedic ward at University Medical Centre Groningen. 25 patients were observed one day after surgery. The questionnaire was filled out by 18 nurses. This experience has taught us it possible to measure patient acuity. Though, further development and validation of the instrument will be required, before it can be used to improve staff- and hospital admission planning and provide a better financing model.
