Introduction: The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children increases worldwide. Genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors play an important role in developing overweight. Previous studies by 4-12 year-olds have shown an association between breakfast frequency and overweight. Our study examined this association by 2 year-olds and controlled this association for factors as ethnicity, education, weight of parents, and single parent family. Methods: Data of the GECKO Drenthe cohort has been used to do the analyses. After exclusion, 1.348 children were included in our study. The weight of the children was classified by BMI z-scores of the WHO. Further information had been obtained by questionnaires about background and lifestyle on both parents and children. The odds ratio’s and 95% confidence interval of the association between breakfast-frequency and overweight of children were analyzed by doing logistic regression analyses. Results: We did not find an association between breakfast frequency and overweight by these young children. Almost 3% of the children does not eat breakfast every day. Children of non-Dutch mothers, parents with lower educational level and children of single parent families skip breakfast more frequently. More than 4% of the children has overweight. Children of parents with overweight and obesity are overweighed more often. Conclusion: As far as we know this study is the first study that examines the association between breakfast frequency and overweight by 2 year-olds. We did not find an association by these young children. Further research is needed to examine the association between breakfast, other lifestyle factors and overweight by these young children.
