Abstract
Pre- and peroperative risk factors for pain after mandibular third molar surgery Summary Purpose: the aim of this study was to estimate the factors that may explain the variety in pain after removal of lower third molar and affect them in a positive way to lower postoperative pain. Patients and Methods: prospective cohort study of a sample of subjects having at least 1 mandibular third molar extracted at the University Medical Centre of Groningen. The predictor variables were categorized as patient related, anatomic and operative specific. The outcome variables were postoperative pain intensity (VAS), pain medication use and disability. Univariate analyses were computed, and then a multiple regression model was used to identify independent predictors for the common postoperative complications. Results: the study sample was comprised of 106 patients. The mean age was 26,2 with median 24; 48,1% female. The multiple regression model revealed gender, impaction depth and pain complaints in other body parts as independent predictors for the pain intensity (VAS). Gender, drug use and impaction depth for the outcome variable painkiller use. K-ATB score, history of dental pain and impaction depth for the outcome variable disability Conclusion: postoperative pain, pain medication use and disability increases with the increase of the depth of lower third molars. Females suffers more pain and tend to use more painkillers after removal. Patients complain of pain in other parts of the body, main experience more postoperative pain at removal site after surgery. Other Drug use during surgery may increase the use of pain medication. Dental anxiety and previous dental pain experience increases the disability days after surgery. Universitair
