Abstract

Introduction: Ten to fifteen percent of the preschool children have at least twelve episodes of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) per year. The best practise in therapy is left unestablished at the moment. Nutritional advice has been proven effective for children with URTI. Little research is performed in children with only food substitutes, or without an iron deficiency. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the advised diet on the laboratory values in pre-school children with recurrent URTI. Method: A diet consisting of green vegetables, beef, full-fat milk and butter was developed. Children aged one to four years, who were referred to the paediatrician due to recurrent URTI were allocated to the intervention and control group. Both groups were given standard care. The intervention group was also given dietary advise. All parents were asked to note daily food intake and child’s symptoms. Results: A decrease in CRP was seen in the intervention group compared to the control group (-3,00 vs -0,458; p 0,034). Furthermore, the Hb concentration increased in both groups (0,280; p < 0,001 respectively 0,214; p = 0,003), infection parameters decreased in the intervention group and the lipid profile improved, with a decrease in cholesterol/HDL-ratio of van -0,564 (p < 0,001). Conclusion: The diet consisting of green vegetables, beef, full-fat milk and butter has a beneficial effect on the laboratory values of preschool children with recurrent URTI.
