Abstract

Goal The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of urological complications in cervical cancer. Secondly, it looks at the urological treatment for these complications and their outcome. A distinction has been made between complications caused by the tumor itself on one hand and complications occurring due to treatment. Within this second group, a sub-division has been made between radiotherapy, surgical treatment or a combination of both. Methods Parameters are added to a database, which included patients who have been treated for cervical cancer in the AMC in Amsterdam from 2000 up to 2010. A minimal follow-up of 1 year was chosen for inclusion. Parameters were scored using doctors’ letters, operation reports, imaging- and endoscopic reports. Results 22.2% of all patients treated for cervical cancer suffered from a urological complication. 16.3% of the patients incurred a complication after the start of the treatment. Radiotherapy complications occurred after an average of 618 days. This is later than the 85 days found in surgical interventions (p <0.001). Of all treated urological complications 81% of the treatments ended up in a desired result. Conclusions A large number of patients with cervical cancer suffers from urological complications. A considerable share of these complications can be successfully resolved. There is a significant difference in time until occurrence of complications between treatment with surgery and radiotherapy. Due to the retrospective nature of the study results may differ from reality. A prospective study design is recommended.
