Abstract

Abstract. The rapidly increasing ageing population and the associated increased fall risk have led to much research to identify factors that contribute to agerelated changes in postural control. The present study focussed on age-related adaptation strategies in response to sudden horizontal surface translations with different strengths and directions. The main observation was the existence of a critical perturbation strength of 0.6 m/s for which a transition in adaptation strategy takes place. Participants showed more stepping responses and slower reaction times in response to surface translations with this critical perturbation strength. Furthermore, middle-aged participants showed less sway and a larger amount of steps in response to perturbations in ML direction when compared to young participants. This finding indicates that middle-aged participants have more difficulty remaining balance during sudden ML perturbations. Results of the present study give more insight into adaptation strategies to challenging balance situations and might be helpful for developing interventions regarding fall prevention.
