Abstract

Objectives: Split-mouth clinical trial on the survival of indirect resin composite and ceramic laminate veneers. Methods: Eleven patients were included, who received a total of 48 facings (Estania C&B: N=24; IPS Empress Esthetic: N=24) on the maxillary anterior teeth. Preparations were made through a mock-up, with an incisal overlap in all cases. Adequate pre-existing composite restorations were not removed before preparation, a silica coating and silane application were carried out. Laminates were etched and silicacoated, cleaned and salinized before cementation with a photo-polymerized luting cement. Restorations were evaluated with the USPHS criteria list at baseline and follow-ups. Results: All patients were evaluated during follow-up between June and September 2015 with a mean observation period of 68,7 months. Five absolute failures were observed, two fractures and three debondings from indirect resin composite. A significant difference was observed between the survival of IPS Empress (100%) and Estenia (79,2%) (p=0,019, Kaplan-Meier, Log Rank (Mantel-Cox)). No significant difference was observed between teeth with (84,6%) and without (95,5%) existing resin composite restorations. Equal for vital (92,3%) and non-vital (77,8%) teeth. Relative failures (color match, surface roughness, fracture of restoration and wear of restoration) were significantly different. Conclusion: IPS Empress veneers shows better results than Estenia on different facets, after an averaging over 5 years. The survival rate is higher and some qualitative parameters (color match, surface roughness, fracture and wear of restoration) are more favorable.
