Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate 1. The oral differences between two groups of older patients (edentulous/dentulous), in two nursing homes. The first nursing home does not have a dentist (nursing home 1) while the second one has two dentists in practice (nursing home 2), and 2. The differences between nursing personnel expertise levels. Research question: What is the consequence of the lack of active oral health care in nursing homes? Method: The intra-oral investigation consists of plaque- and bleedingscores of 20 dentulous patients and the plaque- and retention scores of 20 patient’s prosthesis. The enquiry into the expertise level of nursing personnel was conducted using an online/written survey. Results were analyzed with the Mann-Whitney-U-Test and the Independent Ttest. Results: Only the bleedingscores between the two nursing homes were significantly different. In general, the intra-oral results of nursing home 2, were a bit better. The levels of expertise were, with the exception of one question, not significantly different. In general, the results were comparable, only the report mark from nursing personnel was different. Nursing home 1 has an average mark of 5,79 and nursing home 2 an 6,26. Conclusion: In general, oral hygiene for patients in nursing home 2 appear to be at a higher level, although differences in significance did not become apparent. With the exception of a few questions, the survey did not show apparent differences in expertise levels of nursing personnel between both nursing homes. The low level of oral hygiëne in both nursing homes continues these days, the biggest reason is the lack of knowledge and motivation among nursing personnel. Larger scale studies are required to determine larger differences between both research groups.
