Abstract

Child overweight or obesity is a progressive problem and leads to mental and physical complications which can onset in childhood or in adult life. The process of developing overweight and obesity is contributed to many factors, but the amount of physical activity seems to be a possibility for intervention. Therefore, several Dutch universities combined forces and, along with the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, created the Dutch standard for Healthy Exercise. This standard shows how many minutes per day people should be physically active and to what extend. Children should be moderate to vigorously active for at least 60 minutes daily. The Groninger Expert Centre for Kids with Obesity (GECKO) initiated a birth cohort in 2006 containing ± 3000 children from a localised area in the Netherlands. The children will be intermittently followed until adulthood and will hopefully provide information about the development of overweight and obesity by, for example, giving information about their physical activities and nutrition. In our study we found that only 16 (3,9%) of 406 children between the ages of 3 and 6 were sufficiently active during the time they wore an accelerometer and therefore complied to the standard of being at least moderately active during 60 minutes daily. Nevertheless, there were 90 children (22,2%) who were on average sufficiently active during the 4 days they wore the accelerometer. Children with overweight or obesity were more active than children with normal weights, but did not comply to the Dutch standard for Healthy Exercise more often. The sex of the child and the activity levels of their parents were not of any influence to the amount of exercise executed by the children.
