Abstract

Introduction/aim of study: The aim of this study is to get an understanding in the way task division, concerning taking x-rays, is taking place and if it's done by the rules described in the law BIG. Task division is developing in the Netherlands, partly caused by the growth of group practices. Results from studies show that there is not enough knowledge amongst dentists en dental hygienists concerning task division. Material and method: By taking an interview amongst dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants data were collected. The participants were selected from the NMTdentists' guide in the city Groningen and personally asked to participate in the study. If possible, from every practice a dentist, a hygienist and an assistant were interviewed. Besides asking general information the data were collected by displaying and discussing three cases. The interviews are structured by coding processes and descriptively analyzed. Results: X-rays are often taken by dental assistants. Most of the time they are educated by the dentist they work for. Dentists consider their own assistants as competent in taking x-rays because of the quality of the x-rays and the schooling they give the assistants. The dentist gives the assistant an order to make a x-ray, which can be a verbal order or an announcement on the computer. The dentist is always present in the practice to supervise and, if necessary, to interfere. Solo x-rays are very often taken by the dentist, because of the high level of difficulty. The knowledge about the law BIG is not complete. Discussion: The dentist is not giving a correct order and the dental assistants aren't competent because the lack of a proper education. This is why task division , concerning taking x-rays, is not done by the rules described in the law BIG and disciplinary jurisdiction. The cause can be missing knowledge, but also reduction of costs and laziness are important factors. Conclusion: Task division, concerning taking x-rays, isn't done by the rules described in the law BIG. The lack of knowledge is an important factor. It's recommended to make a protocol that's conform the law BIG and the jurisdiction for taking x-rays. It will make it easier to implement task division in a good way in the practice. In future studies there can be searched deeper in the feelings and causes of why task division is failing .
