Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to examine to what extent children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) combined with reading disabilities (RD) differ in their balance performance from children with DCD or RD as single deficits. A total of 41 children participated; 6 children (mean age: 11.2±1.5) with RD, 8 children (mean age: 11.4±1.2) with DCD, 13 children (mean age: 11.5±1.1) with DCDIRD and 14 controls (mean age: 10.9±1.5). The Movement Assessment Battery for Children (M-ABC) and a experimental static balance task were administered to examine balance control abilities. The static balance task consisted of four sensory conditions (with or without vision, on a firm surface or on a piece of foam) requiring children to stand still on a force platform. On the M-ABC, the DCD/RD group performed poorer on the balance subtests than the RD only group. On the experimental static balance task the DCD group performed poorer than the RD group when at least one of the required sensory inputs was reduced. The results of the present study might indicate a deficit in sensorimotor organization in children with DCD. However, future studies with a larger sample size in a similar study may lead to different more reliable results.
