Abstract

The present study examined the effects of affordances on passing in soccer by comparing the performance of pass kicks in two task conditions representative of a soccer environment over a range of distances. Participants mainly used inside-foot pass kicks with little height to no height over the entire range of distances when the task was to perform pass kicks into a stationary goal. Participants used inside-foot pass kicks with little to no height over short distances and switched to relatively more instep-foot pass kicks with more height over long distances when the task was to perform pass kicks to a moving teammate, which was considered as a transition between types of pass kicks. By comparing the performance of pass kicks in two task conditions representative of a soccer environment, the influence of affordances on passing in soccer was demonstrated. The ecological approach as used in the cunent study offered theoretical insights beneficial for understanding the complex rnechanisms of perception and action in sport. As being one of the first in studying the performance of pass kicks in a natural soccer setting, the present study provides a starting point for researchers in this field of interest.
