Abstract
Abstract Background: Earlier research showed inconsistent effects of cognitive movement strategies for Parkinson's (PD) patients. None of them investigated an intensive training solely focused on cognitive movement strategies. Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect a three-week intensive treatment protocol concerning cognitive movement strategies on gait and transfers of PD patients. Methods: Two different groups participated in this study. The experimental group consisted of 8 PD patients who received cognitive movement strategies besides usual care, the control group (5 PD patients) received usual physiotherapy only. The primary outcome was the performance of the patients, measured by the Modified Parkinson Activity Scale (MPAS) and a three-point rating scale. Results: Both measurement methods showed improvements during and after the experimental intervention. The control group did not improve. Conclusion: Cognitive movement strategies have a positive effect on the performance of gait and transfers of PD patients.
