Abstract

Introduction Dental erosion is defined as the irreversible loss of dental hard tissue by a chemical process that does not involve bacteria. This study will evaluate the effect of a pellicle with attached saliva film on the calcium loss of Hap (hydroxyapatite). It will also explore the relationship between the type and quantity of proteins in whole saliva (stimulated and unstimulated), pellicle, and the erosive calcium loss. Specifically, we will evaluate total protein concentration, protein presence and specific (level of) presence of statherin and Carbonic anhydrase 6 (CA6). Method Eighteen healthy adult volunteers (ASA score =< 1) were recruited for the study from the University of Groningen. Stimulated and unstimulated saliva samples and pellicle samples were collected from all volunteers. Results No significant results were found between protein concentration, protein presence and specific (level of) presence of statherin and calcium loss. Although CA6 was detected in pellicle samples which supports previous research findings (Leinonen et.al., 1999) there was no relationship between amount of CA6 in pellicle samples and calcium loss. However results show a negative significant relationship (P = 0.018) between CA6 in stimulated saliva and amount of calcium loss. Conclusion CarbonicAnhydrase type 6 (CA6) is known for its buffering capacity. It is thought that CA 6 probably catalyses neutralisation of the acid found on dental surfaces from either bacteria of acidic substances. Based on the results and within the limits of this study it can be concluded that there are associations between the carbonic anhydrase 6 concentration in saliva and loss of hydroxyapatite due to an erosive challenge. Further clinical research is needed to investigate whether or not these factors can be shown to play a role in clinical erosion.
