Abstract

Background: The Paleolithic diet focusses on reducing the discordance between the temporary nutritional patterns and the human genome. Due to possible mechanisms which play a part in this it is plausible that the Paleolithic diet may reduce depressive complaints. Objective: This research aimed to survey the feasibility of a Randomised Controlled Trial in which the effects of the Paleolithic diet and the Dutch Schijf van Vijf on depressive complaints are compared. Methods: In this study 36 participants were randomly allocated to the diets. During four weeks the participants followed one of the diets and filled in a weekly questionnaire about the nutrition and feasibility. At the start and at the end of the study they completed a questionnaire about depressive complaints. Results: It took 42 days to include 36 participants of which 32 participants finished the study. The study population was generally representative, but contained relatively more women and highly educated people compared to the Dutch population. The mean compliance for the Paleolithic diet was 75% and for the Schijf van Vijf 83%. The results of a power analysis suggest that a sample size of 230 participants is needed to generate sufficient statistical power in a follow-up study. Conclusion/discussion: Follow-up studies with sufficient statistical power are needed to investigate the effect of the Paleolithic diet on depressive complaints. This may offer prospect to the prevention and treatment of depression. Further research is needed to clarify the possible positive mechanisms of the Paleolithic diet on depressive complaints.
