Abstract

• Objective The objective was to get a greater insight into martial arts punches and to understand more of the multi-joint characteristics that determine the effects of a punch both in peak force and energy transfer. • Methods Subjects were asked to strike a punching bag, while wearing optical markers which were captured by a high speed camera and by measuring the acceleration of the punching bag. A group of boxers and an MMA fighter were observed in different conditions and comparisons were made between punching techniques and effects. • Results Punches are a trade-off between stiffness and movement, offering either high peak forces or more energy transfer and anything in between. Martial artists like other athletes will have to determine their goal suitable for the specific situation.
