Abstract

Viscoelastic properties of biofilm give an indication of the structure of the biofilm. Previous studies evaluated the viscoelastic properties of biofilms by measuring the stress-relaxation of the biofilm. It has been concluded that the penetration of chlorhexidine was related to stress-relaxation and the structure of the biofilm. Good penetration seemed to be correlated with slow stress relaxation which was related to the fact that more bacteria were present in the biofilm then water. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of xylitol on the visco-elastic properties of the biofilm by testing the stress relaxation of biofilm. Furthermore, the effect of 3 and 5% Xylitol on the viability of microorganisms in the biofilm was evaluated. The visco-elasticity was measured using the low load compression tester(LLCT). 20% and 50% deformation was performed on the biofilms and the stress-relaxation was recorded. There were 5 different groups. In each group there were 3 samples and 6 measurement per sample (3x 20% deformation and 3x 50% deformation). To visualize the results from the LLCT, Confocal laser scanning microscope images were conducted.
