Abstract
Objective To review systematically the reported effects of platelet rich plasma (PRP) on infrabony defects. Material and methods Up to june 2009, PubMed and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trial databases were explored with different combinations of three search terms: "lntrabony defects", "lnfrabony defects" and "Platelet-Rich Plasma". Inclusion criteria: human controlled clinical trials designed to treat infrabony defects with application of PRP (test) or without PRP (control), including at least ten patients with a follow-up period of more than 3 months and using clinical assesment for evaluation. Literature search, selection of eligible articles and data extraction were carried out independently by two readers. Results The literature search revealed 22 references and were selected for further analysis. Finally, 8 articles fulfilling the inclusion criteria and were selected for systematically review. Two different treatments were possible; a treatment with PRP and a treatment with PRP in combination with enamel matrix derivative. A meta-analyses was used to combine the result for the two different treatments. Conclusion We found evidence for positive effects of PRP in treatment of infrabony defects. No conclusions can be drawn about the combination with enamel matrix derivative.
