Abstract

Purpose: To determine the effect of three warm up regimens on a laboratory-based 15-km hand cycling time trial performance. In addition, the effect of time trial experience on subsequent time trial performance was investigated. Methods: After two familiarization trials (TTl, TT2), eight male ex-competition rowers (mean ± SD; 23 ± 2.3 yr.; 85.3 ± 30.9 kg; 189.4 ± 5.1 em) performed three laboratory-based 15-km hand cycling time trials (TT3,TT4,TT5) preceded by either no warm up (NO-WU), a 10-minute warm up at 70% V02peak (WU-70) or a 1 0-minute warm up at 40% V02peak (WU-40) both followed by a 5 minute passive recovery, in a counterbalanced design. Results: Mean finish times for NOWU, WU-70 and WU-40 condition were 1396±95, 1416±63 and 1398±147 sec, respectively. Mean power output for the NO-WU, WU-70 and WU-40 was 97.2±15.4, 97.44±8.3 and 93.8±18.7 Watts, respectively. No significant differences in finish times (F2,14 = 0.179, P = 0.838) or power output(F2, 14 = 0.348, P = 0.712) was demonstrated. Each consecutive time trial (TT1-TT5) was performed in a faster finish time (1751±106, 1577±147, 1460±122, 1385±84 and 1366±110 sec, respectively). The average time per kilometer for TT1-TT5 was 116.4±6.0, 104.8±5.2, 97.0±4.6, 92.4±2.5 and 91.2±2.5, respectively. Conclusions: No significant effect of warm up on subsequent time trial performance was demonstrated. Furthermore, results demonstrate that a more stable performance pattern was developed after two or three time trials, emphasizing the importance of previous experience on the development of an optimal pacing strategy in (hand cycling) time trial performance.
