Abstract
Purpose: Aim of this study was to analyze mandibular functionality and quality of life related to oral health in patients with unilateral condylar hyperplasia after condylectomy. Materials and Methods: Out of the total population (n=37), 17 patients filled in the Mandibular Function Impairment Questionnaire (MFIQ) and the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-NL49). Higher scores indicate more mandibular function impairment and a decreased quality of life related to oral health. Spearman’s rank correlations test was applied to analyze associations between age and interval between surgery and research with the outcome of the questionnaires. The Mann Whitney U test was applied to analyze differences between men and women and between left and right condylectomy. Median with interquartile range (IQR) and mean with standard deviation were compared with other oral health problems. Results: The median [IQR] interval between condylectomy and research of 6 men and 11 women was 10.6 years [6.8; 12.3]. De median MFIQ (8.0 [1.0; 15.0]) and OHIP-NL49 (77.0 [52.0; 97.0]) were low compared to other oral health problems. The MFIQ had a strong correlation with the OHIP-NL49 (rs:0.855 (p<0.001)) and with age (rs:0.588 (p=0.013)). There was no significant difference between men and women and between sides of surgery regarding questionnaire outcomes. Conclusion: Patients treated for unilateral condylar hyperplasia with condylectomy experience some impairment in mandibular function and some decrease in quality of life related to oral health.
