Abstract

Objective: To investigate if child, family and environmental factors present in children aged 2.5 years old with cerebral palsy (CP), are related to participation when they are 5-8 years old. Methods: Based on two reviews about factors related to participation and a previous accomplished research program on CP, independent variables were selected for longitudinal investigation. 46 parents of children, who previously participated in the PERRIN CP 0-5 study, filled in the Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE). The CAPE was used to determine participation level of the children at age 5-8 years. Univariate relations between the independent variables and participation were calculated using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. For dichotomous variables a Mann Whitney test was used to determine differences in participation between groups. Results: Children with less severe CP, better mental function, better movement ability, better communication, better self-care and better social functioning at the age of 2.5 years, participated more when they were older than children with worse functional abilities (p .355- .761, p < 0.01). Problems that parents experienced in their family participation when their children were 2.5 years old, were related to lower participation levels when the children were school-aged (p -.344 - -.495, p < 0.05). Children who attended special day-care, participated less in most activity types when they were older, compared to children who attended regular day-care Conclusion: Mainly child factors measured at a young age are related to participation when children with CP are 5-8 years old. Also family factors have an important role in the development of a child's participation.
