Abstract

Aim: This study evaluated through a systematic literature review the influence of the quality of the coronal restoration on the outcome of the endodontic treatment. Material and methods: Medline (1966 until now), EMBASE (1966 until now) and Central were searched to identify in-vitro and in-vivo studies. The influence of the quality of the root canal treatment, quality of the coronal restoration and the periapical status were used as indusia criteria. Also the articles had to be written in English or Dutch and completely accessible. Results: Of the 28 identified articles only 3 were eglible for this review. All of these 3 studies were cross-sectional studies and the data of these studies showed that endodontically treated teeth with a good coronal restoration and a acceptable quality of endodontic treatment had a lower prevalence of periapical radiolucensies than teeth with an unacceptable coronal restoration or endodontic treatment. The success rate of unadequate treated root canals was significantly lower than well-treated root canals independent of the quality of the coronal restoration. Conclusion: Endodontically treated teeth with an acceptable coronal restoration and a adequate treated root canal showed less periapical radiolucencies in comparison with teeth of which the coronal restoration or endodontic treatment unacceptable is. The treatment outco1ne of an endodontic treatment is influenced by the quality of the endodontic treatment and by the coronal restoration. Both of them have to be of good quality.
