Abstract

Background: The population ages and the prevalence of dementia increases. Early intervention is necessary to slow cognitive decline. Objective: The objective of this pilot study is to investigate the effects of a combined resistance (RT) and cognitive training (CT) on memory in elderly with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia (MD). Methods: 15 elderly with MCI or MD were randomly allocated to an 8-week twice-weekly combined RT and CT (n=7) or social visits intervention (SV) (n=8). The primary outcome measure was memory including short term and long term verbal and visuo-spatial memory. Secondary outcome measures consisted of global cognition and seven physical tests. Results: The intervention did not yield significant improvements in memory but there was a small effect for the visual memory span forward test and a nearly medium effect for global cognition. Other memory tests showed small to medium effects in favor of the control group. The intervention significantly improved leg strength. Conclusion: Although there were no significant effects on memory, there are some possibly clinically relevant effects. Future studies should include longer intervention periods, larger sample sizes and both a RT only and CT only group to investigate whether CT and RT interact to optimize effects.
