Abstract

Previous research shows that no-show is a growing problem in health care, which contributes to higher health care costs and longer waiting lists. To decrease these costs and waiting lists it is important to research what a dentist can do to decrease no-show behavior. The research question is: “What is the effect of an affective communicationstyle in comparison to a dominant communicationstyle of the dentist and SES on patient satisfaction and the frequency of no-show?” In this research the communicationstyle of the dentist, patient satisfaction, SES, no show and reason for no show were measured using surveys amongst 80 participants with a low social economic status and 80 participants with a high social economic status. The surveys were filled in by the participants on the street of neighbourhoods with a low social economic status and neighbourhoods with a high social economic status. The hypotheses have been tested using a regression analysis, a logistic regression analysis and a One-way Anova. Descriptive analyses have been carried out for the variables gender, age, social economic status and the reason for no-show. The analyses have shown that a significant correlation exists between the communication style of the dentist and patientsatisfaction, regardless of the social economic status of the patient. A correlation between patient satisfaction and no-show has not been found. The differences between the results of this research and the results of previous research, which shows that a correlation between patientsatisfaction and no-show does exist, can be explained in several ways. Firstly, in this research only a difference between no-show and no no-show was made, not further specifying the number of no-shows. Secondly, the measures dentists may already have taken to prevent no-show were not taken into account. Lastly, many researches to no-show and patient satisfaction were carried out in Great-Brittain, where the health care is funded in a different way than in The Netherlands.
