Abstract

The effects of medical interventions on quality of life is in health care increasingly examined. Besides clinical outcomes, the 'Health Related Quality of Life'(HRQoL) has become increasingly important for patients and clinicians4 ' 5 • For two decades, there has started an development for instruments for measuring the 'Oral Health related Quality of Life' (OHrQoL)16 ' 17 • This is improving the quality of life in individuals displaying where everyday life is limited by oral abnormalities or restrictions18 • To measure OHRQoL in children there is the 'Child Oral Health Quality of Life' (COHQOL)23 • The COHrQoL measures the impact of oral and orofacial conditions on the functional, emotional and social wellbeing of children aged 6 to 14 years23 ' 26 • The 'Child Perceptions Questionnaire' (CPQ) is a validated questionnaire for children to be taken. There are several versions of the CPQ developed based on the age of the child: the CPQS-10 for children aged 8 to 10 years and the CPQ11-14 for children 11 to 14 years 23 ' 29 • There are age-specific questionnaires developed in the interest of the cognitive, emotional and social development of the child30 • The CPQ appears to understand the impact of oral health on quality of life in children. Within the field of orthodontics, the CPQ can be a valuable addition32 ' 38 • For use of the CPQ in the Netherlands, it is necessary to translate this instrument and to check the psychometric qualities. Translation is a prerequisite for cross-cultural adjustment because the linguistic and cultural context in which an instrument is used can affect the validity42 • The CPQS-10 is a questionnaire comprising 25 items, divided into four domains: 'Oral Symptoms' (OS), 'Functional Limitations' (FL), /Emotional Well Being' (EWB) and 'Social Well-being' (SWB). It examined the extent to which the items measuring the domains as intended. In this thesis is insight into the creation of a valid CPQS-10 for use in the Netherlands through the implementation of 3 studies. It started with a literature study, followed by the main study, which test the Dutch CPQS-10 psychometrically and finally, a translation study. The literature has concluded that the CPQS-10 is valid and reliable in several countries24 ' 29 ' 36 ' 47 ' 50 • Analysis of psychometric tests showed that the construct validity of the CPQS-10 in casts doubt on the domain SWB, OS and FL. Reliability of CPQS-10 in terms of internal consistency and in terms of stability has proved unacceptable for the domain OS. The Dutch version of the CPQS-10 was tested for validity and reliability. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted, which proved that not all items from the Dutch CPQS-10 measure what they intended to measure. Construct validity is acceptable for all areas of CPQ8-10, after elimination of the nine items. The reliability in terms of internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha and inter-item correlation. The values shown are acceptable for the Dutch CPQS-10, except the oral symptoms domain, according to the literature. Analysis on the original translation CPQ8-10 was carried out using the forward-backward method. The translations are many differences have been observed, showing the importance of a correct translation method is proved. Analysis and further research into the Dutch CPQS-10 is recommended.
