Abstract

Background: Annually around 1100 women are diagnosed with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) in the Netherlands. It is the most lethal gynaecological malignancy accounting for 950 deaths each years. The primary treatment of EOC consists of surgical treatment followed by chemotherapy. This study was performed to evaluate treatment of EOC in our institution. Methods: Between January 1, 2000 and December 31 2010 patients with EOC, diagnosed and treated in our institution, were selected. In each patient we collected the following data: tumour characteristic, dates of diagnosis and death, FIGO stage, surgical therapy and chemotherapy. The primary outcome of this study was patients survival (plotted with Kaplan Meier curves) categorized by FIGO stage. Secondary outcome measures were the length of the disease free interval, the percentage of patients who received complete debulking and the number of complications occurring after surgery. Results: We included 295 patients with EOC in this study. The overall five-year survival rate was 35.9% (Standard Error [SE] = 0.032). The five-year survival rate of patients in FIGO stage I, II,III and IV were 79.7% (SE = 0.07), 74.5% (SE = 0.12), 30.5% (SE = 0.045) en 5.7% (SE = 0.04), respectively. The median survival time in FIGO stage III was 31 months (confidence interval [CI] = 20 – 42 month) and in FIGO stage IV the median survival time was 14 months (CI = 9-19 months). Conclusion: Compared to similar studies no major differences are seen between results, however comparison between similar studies is difficult due to the various factors influencing results.
