Abstract

Background: There is no consensus on the treatment of a Rockwood type III acromioclavicular (AC) dislocation. This study aims to compare the conservative and surgical (Lockdown) treatment of a Rockwood type III AC dislocation. Materials and methods: In this reterospective case-control study patients with a previous AC dislocation (> year after follow-up) were included in the period of January 2011 until July 2017. Patients with a conservative treatment (n=22) were compared with patients who underwent Lockdown surgery (n=8). The VAS pain score and the ROM were primary outcome measures; the NCS, the OSS, the CSS were secondary outcome measures. All outcome measures were analysed by the independent t-test or the Mann-Whitney U test. Additionally, complications were described in both groups. Results: The NCS, OSS and CSS scores were higher in the conservative group and the ROM showed higher outcomes in the surgical group. However, no significant differences were found between both groups (all outcome measures p > 0.13). Conclusion: the treatment of Rockwood type III AC dislocation remains controversial.
