Objectives: A role of the immune system in the development of bipolar disorder has long been suspected. Multiple models have been proposed for this interaction and a lot of research has been done on markers of immune dysregulation in bipolar disorder. The goal of this study is to analyse the differences in growth factors, endothelial factors and serum receptors in blood, determined in the bipolar disorder cohort and healthy controls of the MOODINFLAME study. Methods: In a cross-sectional case-control study, blood of a euthymic bipolar disorder cohort and healthy controls of the MOODINFLAME study was analysed for serum values of TNF-α, IL-8, PTX3, SCF, IL-2Rα, IL-1Ra, VCAM-1, ICAM-1, CXCL10/ip-10, EGF, IGFBP-2, BDNF, PDGF-BB and VEGF, by means of the bead-based Luminex system and flow cytometric analysis. Results: VCAM-1 levels were significantly lower in bipolar disorder patients than healthy control. The same trend was found for ICAM-1. No significant results were found for the other serum factors. Conclusions: These results provide evidence for a dysregulation of a very specific compartment of the immune system in patients with bipolar disorder. Lower levels of VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 in euthymic bipolar patients point to an alternation of the adhesion activity of immune cells, which in turn can be related to the symptomatology of a manic episode by modulating the pro-inflammatory and neurotransmitter balance in the brain.
