Abstract

English summary: Background: Many diseases, including colorectal carcinoma (CRC), could be detected by analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In a pilotstudy held in 2015 in the Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) an electronical nose was used: the AeonoseTM. The results in detection of CRC were promising, with a sensitivity of 96% and a specificity of 91%, Aim: Validating the diagnostic value of the VOC-pattern found by AeonoseTM, in a cohort of patients scheduled for colonoscopy because of a suspicion of a (pre-)malignancy. Methods: In this single centre prospective cohort study patients scheduled for colonoscopy because of a suspicion of a (pre-)malignancy, were asked for participation when going to the nurse appointment. A total of 116 patients were included, after which they breathed through the AeonoseTM. After exclusion, 62 patients remained for analysis. Data were deliverd blinded to the eNose Company, who analysed the records based on the prior established breath pattern. Results: Of the 62 patients, seven had a CRC and the other 55 patients belonged to the disease control group. Based on the prior established breath pattern, a sensitivity of 0% and a specificity of 89,1% was found. Discussion: A minimum of improvements at the AeonoseTM, used at the validation study, could make the initial model invalid because of the finesse of measuring. Conclusion: Because of little improvements at the AeonoseTM it seems not possible to validate the earlier established VOC-pattern with this version of the AeonoseTM. In future research a new VOC-pattern should be developed with the current, standardised AeonoseTM, taking into account the different measurement locations.
